1 Background
1.1 Conservation and revitalization of HERITAGE ROUTES has aroused worldwide concern
In 2003, " HERITAGE ROUTES " was officially included in the World Heritage List as a new large-scale heritage type. The concept of "routes" or cultural itineraries was discussed by the expert meeting on "Routes as a Part of our Cultural Heritage" (Madrid, Spain, November 1994). The concept of heritage routes is shown to be a rich and fertile one, offering a privileged framework in which mutual understanding, a plural approach to history and a culture of peace can all operate. A heritage route is composed of tangible elements of which the cultural significance comes from exchanges and a multi-dimensional dialogue across countries or regions, and that illustrate the interaction of movement, along the route, in space and time.
In 2008, the 16th Congress of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) adopted the Charter on Cultural Routes. The regional conservation of heritage and the overall dynamic protection of humanity and nature have become the primary trend of heritage conservation. In February 2020, ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Cultural Routes (CIIC) held an international academic seminar on the theme of "Living the Cultural Route" on its 25th anniversary. It can be seen that the conservation and revitalization of Heritage Routes has become an important international issue.

1.2 Outstanding value and current work about the South China Historical Trail are attracting wide attention from academies home and abroad
With a long history and profound culture, the South China Historical Trail is the channel of economic and cultural exchanges. It’s the road of military affairs, business travel and ethnic migration and integration, which shows the historical development of Guangdong and the continuation of the context, representing ancient post culture in China and even the world.
At present, some high-quality work on the conservation and revitalization of the South China Historical Trail has been carried out in Guangdong, and some innovative practices including integrate heritage conservation, cultural exploitation, rural revitalization and regional coordinated development are promoted, which has aroused great attention in China and should also get more discussions around the world.

1.3 Extension of long-term cooperation in the field of protection and activation of cultural heritage between China and France
Europe, especially France, has rich experience and practice in the protection of heritage routes, sustainable tourism, and rural revitalization. There are many cultural resources such as ancient towns and villages along the South China Historical Trail, and the current historical trail tourism is booming. This seminar can extend the long-term cooperation with French ministry of Culture, la Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, l’Association des Petites Cités de Caractère de France, le Réseau des Grands Sites de France (RGSF), l’Association Nationale des Architectes des Bâtiments de France (ANABF), etc. Its purpose is to establish friendly relations with the department and related professional institutions of France and the world, to improve the quality of the protection and revitalization of heritage routes, and carry out a series of international cooperation on the theoretical research and practical use of heritage protection and revitalization.
