1 Background
1.1 Conservation and revitalization of HERITAGE ROUTES has aroused worldwide concern
In 2003, " HERITAGE ROUTES " was officially included in the World Heritage List as a new large-scale heritage type. The concept of "routes" or cultural itineraries was discussed by the expert meeting on "Routes as a Part of our Cultural Heritage" (Madrid, Spain, November 1994). The concept of heritage routes is shown to be a rich and fertile one, offering a privileged framework in which mutual understanding, a plural approach to history and a culture of peace can all operate. A heritage route is composed of tangible elements of which the cultural significance comes from exchanges and a multi-dimensional dialogue across countries or regions, and that illustrate the interaction of movement, along the route, in space and time.
In 2008, the 16th Congress of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) adopted the Charter on Cultural Routes. The regional conservation of heritage and the overall dynamic protection of humanity and nature have become the primary trend of heritage conservation. In February 2020, ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Cultural Routes (CIIC) held an international academic seminar on the theme of "Living the Cultural Route" on its 25th anniversary. It can be seen that the conservation and revitalization of Heritage Routes has become an important international issue.

At present, some high-quality work on the conservation and revitalization of the South China Historical Trail has been carried out in Guangdong, and some innovative practices including integrate heritage conservation, cultural exploitation, rural revitalization and regional coordinated development are promoted, which has aroused great attention in China and should also get more discussions around the world.
